If There's One Thing That Defines Del Mar, It's the Beach
People move to Del Mar for a lot of reasons.
Some come for the schools.
Some come for the restaurants.
Others fall in love with the homes overlooking the Pacific.
But if you ask me what truly defines Del Mar, the answer is simple.
The beach.
It's the heartbeat of the community.
It's where mornings begin with a cup of coffee and a walk along the shoreline.
It's where families spend lazy summer afternoons.
It's where surfers paddle out before work.
It's where neighbors gather at the end of the day to watch another unforgettable sunset.
I've spent countless hours on these beaches, both personally and with clients, and one thing I've learned is that no two people experience Del Mar exactly the same way.
That's part of what makes this place so special.
Del Mar Isn't Just One Beach
One of the biggest misconceptions people have is that Del Mar is simply one long stretch of sand.
Technically that's true.
But ask anyone who lives here, and they'll tell you something different.
Del Mar is made up of several distinct beach areas, each with its own personality.
After a while, almost everyone develops a favorite.
In fact, if you ask five Del Mar locals where they like to spend the day, you'll probably get five different answers.
Personally, I almost always find myself around 24th and 25th Street.
I love that stretch because it feels a little quieter than some of the more popular areas. There's usually plenty of room to spread out, the atmosphere is relaxed, and it feels like you're surrounded by neighbors rather than crowds.
Some of my friends won't go anywhere except 15th Street, where they're just steps from Del Mar Village, Powerhouse Park, and their favorite restaurants.
Families often prefer Powerhouse Beach because of the playground, grassy park, lifeguards, and easy beach access.
Dog owners naturally gravitate toward North Beach, while others prefer the quieter shoreline near the San Dieguito River Mouth.
That's one of my favorite things about Del Mar.
There isn't one "best" beach.
There's simply the beach that becomes yours.
North Beach (Dog Beach)
If you're a dog owner, this is one of the happiest places you'll ever visit.
Located near the San Dieguito River and the Del Mar Fairgrounds, North Beach is known throughout San Diego simply as Dog Beach.
Watching dozens of dogs race through the surf while their owners laugh and talk with one another never gets old.
Even if you don't own a dog, it's worth visiting.
The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and unmistakably Del Mar.
I often recommend this area for long morning walks because the views seem to stretch forever.
Powerhouse Beach
If someone were visiting Del Mar for the very first time, this is probably where I'd bring them.
Powerhouse Beach sits right in the heart of town.
It's steps from restaurants, cafés, Del Mar Plaza, and Powerhouse Park.
Families love it because everything is so convenient.
Kids can spend hours in the sand, then head straight to the playground or grab ice cream in the Village.
It's one of those rare places where everything feels connected.
15th Street Beach
Just north of Powerhouse Beach is another favorite among locals.
This stretch has a wonderful energy.
Early in the morning you'll find surfers waiting for waves, runners enjoying the firm sand, photographers capturing the sunrise, and neighbors greeting each other during their daily walks.
It's also one of the easiest places to transition between the Village and the beach, making it ideal if you're planning to spend the day exploring both.
My Favorite Spot
People occasionally ask me which beach I choose when I have a free afternoon.
Without hesitation, I usually say 24th or 25th Street.
For me, it strikes the perfect balance.
It's close enough to everything, yet it feels more relaxed than the beaches closer to the Village.
I'll often bring a chair, spend a few hours enjoying the ocean, and then take a walk toward the Village for dinner.
That's one of the things I love about Del Mar.
No matter where you start, it's easy to wander from one stretch of beach to another.
The River Mouth
One of Del Mar's most unique natural features is where the San Dieguito River meets the Pacific.
Depending on the season, the landscape changes dramatically.
Some days you'll see shorebirds feeding along the water's edge.
Other days photographers line the shoreline hoping to capture the perfect sunset.
It's quieter here.
A little more peaceful.
If you're looking to escape the crowds for an hour, this is one of my favorite recommendations.
Torrey Pines State Beach
At the southern end of Del Mar, the scenery changes once again.
Towering sandstone cliffs rise above the shoreline.
The beach feels wider.
The views become even more dramatic.
Pair a morning hike through Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve with an afternoon on the beach, and you've got one of the best days you can spend anywhere in San Diego.
It's one of those places that reminds you how fortunate we are to live here.
My Favorite Morning Routine
Whenever I have a little extra time before work, I keep things simple.
I'll grab a coffee from Little Joy Coffee Bar.
Walk down to the sand.
Head north toward Dog Beach.
Turn around near the river mouth.
Then slowly make my way back.
There's something about walking along the water before the town fully wakes up that never gets old.
Some mornings the beach feels almost empty.
Other mornings you'll see surfers, runners, dog walkers, and photographers all enjoying it in their own way.
Every day is a little different.
Why Families Love Del Mar Beaches
One of the things that stands out to me is how family friendly Del Mar feels.
The beaches are clean.
Lifeguards are nearby during the busy season.
Restaurants and restrooms are within walking distance.
Powerhouse Park is just above the sand.
Children can go from the playground to the beach without ever getting back into the car.
As a parent, it's easy to appreciate how convenient that is.
The Best Place to Watch the Sunset
People often ask me where they should watch the sunset.
Honestly, it's hard to go wrong.
Some evenings I'll head to Seagrove Park.
Other nights I'll sit on the beach near 25th Street.
Sometimes I'll grab a drink at Monarch and watch the colors change from above the coastline.
Each location offers a slightly different perspective.

My Perfect Beach Day
If someone gave me one perfect day in Del Mar, here's exactly how I'd spend it.
Start with coffee at Little Joy.
Walk through Del Mar Village while it's still quiet.
Head down to the beach and spend a few hours around 24th or 25th Street.
Take a long walk north toward Dog Beach before turning around and heading back.
Have lunch at Jake's Del Mar.
Relax on the sand for the afternoon.
As the sun begins to set, grab a cocktail at Monarch or find a spot in Seagrove Park.
Watch another Del Mar sunset.
Then slowly walk back through the Village.
No rushing.
No schedule.
Just another day in Del Mar.
Why People Fall in Love with Del Mar
After helping buyers throughout North County Coastal, I've realized something.
People don't buy homes here because they're close to the beach.
They buy because the beach becomes part of their life.
Morning walks become a routine.
Sunsets become something you experience several nights a week.
You start having a favorite stretch of sand.
A favorite coffee shop.
A favorite place to watch the waves.
Before long, Del Mar stops feeling like somewhere you visit.
It starts feeling like home.
Final Thoughts
Del Mar's beaches aren't just beautiful.
They're personal.
Ask ten locals where they like to spend the day, and you'll probably hear ten different answers.
That's one of the things I love most about this community.
There's a stretch of shoreline here for everyone.
Whether yours ends up being 15th Street, Powerhouse Beach, Dog Beach, or like me, the quieter area around 24th and 25th Street, I have a feeling you'll eventually find yourself returning to the same spot again and again.
Because once Del Mar becomes part of your life, you don't just visit the beach.
